Happy New Year!

31st December 2008 – New Years Eve
8.30am and a sleep in – how awesome! Stayed in bed with a cuppa and my laptop while waiting for Tam and Andy to get up. No rush to be anywhere today! We lazed around until 11.30am, when we headed off for a walk, down Chapel St and into St Kilda. The weather was a bit ordinary, so when we arrived at the beach it wasn’t overly pleasant. A walk down the Pier and along the beach before stopping for a ‘roadie’ that we’d packed in Andy’s backpack. Down Ackland St we stopped at La Roche for lunch and a drink. $13.50 parma and drink was the special of the day, and when the parma came out the size of the plate both Tam and I knew we would never make it through. So Andy finished his curry and then what was left of our parmas and chips. Left at 3.30pm and down the other side of Acland St where Tam and I inspected a shop and Andy amused himself with a beer. Trammed it back to Chapel St, then walked back to the unit where we had another drink whilst reading all about the state of Australian Cricket in the paper before having a nap. Up and at em we were dressed and headed out around 7.30 for Flinders St, along with a million other people (well perhaps not quite). The plan was to head down Birrarung Marr and then across to Southbank, however there were people everywhere, it was packed. So we turned around and headed back to Fed Square, where I’d spotted one of the cafes with some empty seats. So we went in there, which was great because we were able to sit, drink, listen to the music and had an accessible bathroom. Also had $10 fish and chips, whilst the portions were lean we weren’t too hungry after massive, late lunch. The kids fireworks were on at 9.15pm, although we couldn’t see much from where we were. So we drank there until 11.45pm when we headed for the river, along with the rest of Melbourne it seemed, and were almost at the bridge when the first of the fireworks went off. Happy New Year! Andy managed to get me a new years kiss and after the fireworks were done we braced ourselves for the crush. It took ages to get across the bridge and into Southbank (and nearly lost my phone in the process) but eventually we made it and the congestion cleared up. Into the Casino we headed for Steakout, and were there for about 2 minutes before the band went on a break. Had a drink and found some seats while we waited for their return, and then Andy and I went up for a dance, before I found a random that I started dancing with, and eventually got a real new years kiss. However the novelty wore off, and after making an exit to the bathrooms we took off, although I did return to say goodbye. We walked to Southern Cross Station, which was chockas with people wearing white from the dance rav at Telstra Dome (which apparently finished at 8am in the morning), and after letting 1 train take off because it was full we waiting for the next to arrive about 15 minutes later, just before 2.30pm. Squeezed our way in and made it fairly comfortably to South Yarra, walking home and having a glass of port whilst we did the quiz from the paper... or at least attempted to do the quiz in between some very long blinks. It was 4.30 before we eventually called it a night.

1st January 2009
9.30am and the light through the blinds was too bright! Dozed and read, not wanting (or being able to) get up. 11am Tam and Andy surfaced, and we headed off for breakfast, only to find the cafe at the end of the street closed. The Jam Factory for pancakes, which didn’t sit very well and I wasn’t able to finish them. Back to the room, and I felt like I shouldn’t have eaten at all. We got back, I did another load of washing and then got my dvd’s out of the car, and we spent the afternoon watching ‘The Three Musketeers’ and ‘Shakespeare in Love’ – classics! We were just about to start on ‘Shawshank Redemption’ when Andy asked for a hand with the crossword he was doing, so we did, and being after 6.30pm decided tea at some point would be a good idea, so walked across to IGA and then down Chapel St to Coles and bought cheese, dip, biscuits, pizza and garlic bread to have on return. So we sat and ate and drank and did the crossword until late, using my computer occasionally to give us a hand. About 11pm I started falling asleep and Tam went to bed, so I got up and organised my stuff a bit, with Andy giving new crossword clues and quiz questions while I packed. I had a shower to save waking them tomorrow morning, and went to bed after midnight, still so full and not looking forward to my alarm going off in around 6 hours time! A fantastic relaxing day!
